เทศกาลทานาบาตะนี้ ชาวญี่ปุ่นจะเขียนคำอธิษฐานลงบนกระดาษสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า 5 สี ที่เรียกว่า "ทังซะขุ"(Tanzaku) แล้วนำไปห้อยบนกิ่งไผ่ พร้อมด้วยของประดับอื่นๆ เช่น กระดาษตัดเป็นรูปคล้ายๆ โซ่แทนสัญลักษณ์ของทางช้างเผือก วันรุ่งขึ้นก็จะนำกระดาษอธิษฐานเหล่านี้ไปลอยน้ำ
ความหมายของกระดาษอธิษฐาน ทังซะขุ (Tanzaku) 5 สีมีดังนี้ครับ
- สีฟ้า - ความสุข ความโชคดี
- สีชมพู - ความรัก
- สีแดง - ความสำเร็จ
- สีเหลือง - ความมั่งคั่ง เงินทอง
- สีเขียว - ความสมปรารถนาในการเรียนและการทำงาน
ชาวญี่ปุ่นเชื่อกันว่า วันทานาบาตะนั้น เป็นวันแห่งความสุขสมหวังของดาวสองดวง คือดาวเจ้าหญิงทอผ้า โอริฮิเมะ หรือดาวเวก้า (Vega) เป็นดาวที่สดใสที่สุดในกลุ่มดาวพิณ กับดาวคนเลี้ยงวัว ฮิโกโบชิ หรือดาวอัลแตร์ (Altair) เป็นดาวที่สดใสที่สุดในกลุ่มดาวนกอินทรี ที่ผลัดพรากจากกัน โดยมีแม่น้ำแห่งสวรรค์ (อามาโนคาวา) ซึ่งก็คือทางช้างเผือกกั้นไว้ ทั้งสองจะมีโอกาสได้ข้ามแม่น้ำแห่งสวรรค์ (อามาโนคาวา) มาพบกันแค่ปีละครั้งในวันที่ 7 เดือน 7 นี้ ชาวญี่ปุ่นจึงถือกำเนิดวันทานาบาตะขึ้นมา ในวันทานาบาตะนี้ ชาวญี่ปุ่นจะตัดกิ่งไผ่มาปักไว้ และเขียนคำอธิษฐานห้อยกับกิ่งไผ่ เพราะเชื่อว่า คำอธิษฐานจะสมหวังเหมือนกับที่เจ้าหญิงทอผ้า โอริฮิเมะ และคนเลี้ยงวัว ฮิโกโบชิ สมหวังได้มาพบกัน
ตำนานวันทานาบาตะ
กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว ด้านเหนือของแม่น้ำแห่งสวรรค์ อามาโนคาวา มีลูกสาวของกษัตริย์ผู้ครองสรวงสวรรค์ ชื่อว่า โอริฮิเมะ นางเป็นผู้ที่มีความสามารถทอผ้าได้อย่างงดงาม เป็นที่ชื่นชอบของพระบิดา พระบิดาจึงให้เจ้าหญิงทอผ้า โอริฮิเมะทอผ้าอยู่ตลอดเวลา จนเจ้าหญิงทอผ้า โอริฮิเมะไม่มีโอกาสได้ไปพบรักกับชายใดเหมือนกับผู้หญิงคนอื่นๆ
ด้วยความห่วงใยพระบิดาจึงให้นางได้มีโอกาสพบกับ คนเลี้ยงวัว ฮิโกโบชิ ที่อาศัยอยู่อีกฟากของแม่น้ำแห่งสวรรค์ อามาโนคาวา และเมื่อเจ้าหญิงทอผ้า โอริฮิเมะ ได้พบกับคนเลี้ยงวัว ฮิโกโบชิไม่นาน ทั้งสองก็หลงรักกันและแต่งงานกัน
หลังจากแต่งงาน โอริฮิเมะก็ไม่ทอผ้าอีก ส่วนฮิโกโบชิก็ไม่ไปเลี้ยงวัว ปล่อยให้วิ่งเพ่นพ่านไปทั่วสวรรค์ กษัตริย์แห่งสวรรค์ทรงกริ้วมาก จึงจับทั้งคู่แยกกัน โดยให้อยู่กันคนละฟากของโดยมีแม่น้ำแห่งสวรรค์ อามาโนคาวา หรือทางช้างเผือกกั้น
เจ้าหญิงทอผ้า โอริฮิเมะ เสียใจเป็นอันมาก จึงขอร้องพระบิดาให้ได้พบกับคนเลี้ยงวัว ฮิโกโบชิอีก พระบิดาทรงใจอ่อน อนุญาตให้ทั้งคู่ได้พบกันปีละครั้ง ในวันที่ 7 เดือน 7 ของทุกปีซึ่งก็คือวันทานาบาตะ โดยโอริฮิเมะจะต้องกลับมาขยันทอผ้าให้เสร็จ จึงจะได้พบกับสามี ฮิโกโบชิ
แม้ทั้งสองจะมีโอกาสได้พบกัน แต่ก็ไม่อาจข้ามแม่น้ำแห่งสวรรค์ อามาโนคาวาไปหากันได้ ได้แต่เห็นกันอยู่คนละฝั่ง เจ้าหญิงทอผ้าโอริฮิเมะจึงได้แต่นั่งร้องไห้ แต่แล้วก็มีฝูงนกกางเขนบินผ่านมา ด้วยความสงสารฝูงนกกางเขนจึงอาสาใช้ปีกของพวกตนเป็นสะพานให้ทั้งคู่ได้ข้ามไปพบกัน แต่หากในวันทานาบาตะปีใดเกิดฝนตก ฝูงนกกางเขนนั้นก็จะไม่ได้บินผ่านมา ทำให้เจ้าหญิงทอผ้า โอริฮิเมะ และคนเลี้ยงวัว ฮิโกโบชิ ต้องรอจนกว่าจะถึงวันทานาบาตะอีกปี
